It is a roadside cave in the Terelj region, near Turtle Rock, more than 50 km from Ulaanbaatar. To the left is a narrow path leading up to the road, with a horizontal entrance in the middle. The locals say that it is a cave of 100 monks (also called a cave of 1000 monks).
Legend has it that a group of monks hid in a cave during the modern religious and cultural repression, or that a group of disciples of Zanabazar Khutagt escaped from Galdan Boshigt’s troops during the Khalkha Oirat riots. Mongolians call it so because many things are called thousands, tens, and billions.
Later, in 1958, part of the filming of the Mongolian feature film “Three Friends” was made using the cave, so it became known as the Cave of Three Friends. In the film, two thieves took refuge in the cave and brought cultural treasures such as an ancient gold-plated deity to hide, and a classmate’s friends found out and informed the police.
